1 Outline

Diabetes UK wanted to overhaul its website by starting on a review of its homepage and site navigation.

2 The Approach

The project proposed a number of user-centred research activities, before a redesign of the home page layout based on user and business needs. Reporting to the Foviance UX manager I carried out research and design activities below.

3 Tasks & Deliverables

  • review desk research and analysis (previous research studies, stakeholder requirements, user data)
  • organise and prepare artefacts for 12, 90-minute lab research sessions with people with diabetes, that included background interviews, reviews of draft homepage layouts, and card sorting exercise to review navigation
  • analyse and deliver summary report, draft sitemap and homepage wireframe and high level user journeys
  • provide input and participate in persona workshop.

4 User Journeys

These drew primarily from the user research and identify the key goals mapped to possible journeys through the site

5 Sitemap

  • this was developed from an internal workshop and review of navigation of other selected charity websites
  • it identified or suggested ideal call to actions on each main landing page
  • it provided an indication of how each section married user goals and business needs

6 Concept wireframe

The proposed homepage featured content areas that addressed different audience types and different stages and aspects of diabetes

7 Challenges

  • highly specific recruitment of user participants
  • multiple stakeholders and ambitious client expectations
  • tight project timeframe
